You Probably Don’t Need Therapy

I read this article in The Atlantic recently and was nodding along in agreement.

I've been saying for years most people in therapy don't actually need it. They should hire a life coach instead.

Not because I don't think therapy is useful or beneficial. I've been in therapy myself at different periods in my life. But because therapy, as the article says, is intended as a short-term solution to address acute symptoms and areas where you aren't fully functioning.

Therapy is not intended for you if you're managing but feel generally dissatisfied with all or some parts of your life.

Coaching is.

Therapy places the focus on your past and teaches you how to cope.  While coaching looks at where you are now and helps you intentionally improve your present and your future.

And with coaching you still get what drew you to therapy in the first place. A time to talk about yourself and how you're feeling without the judgment or vulnerability that comes with talking to coworkers, friends and family.

Instead of dwelling on your past and focusing on survival with a therapist, it's time to hire a coach and start planning what comes next.

As a coach, I have helped hundreds of women prioritize themselves without feeling selfish or guilty and I can help you do it too.
