Your Reason is Good Enough

I've been seeing a pattern with many of my clients for the last couple of weeks.

They want to make a decision but don't feel like their reasons are "good enough".

Some examples...

  • Wanting to leave a job.

  • Wanting to end a relationship.

  • Wanting to skip a trip with friends.

  • Wanting to go to yoga instead of happy hour.

Each time, my clients know what they want for themselves, but they feel like they need a "good reason" to do what they want to do.

The truth is, their desire is reason enough.

They don't need to explain or justify what they want to anyone else. They just need to know what they want to do and then have their own back on the decision.

Do you find yourself doing this too?

If so, first get clear on your decision. Take everyone else out of the equation. If you didn't have to worry about or tell anyone else, what would you do? That's your answer.

And it's enough of a reason to say yes to you and no to everyone else.

Now, there may be times where you decide to do it anyway. For example, going to the end of season sports banquet for one of your kids or the retirement party for a long-time coworker may not be things you truly want to do. But you can still decide to do them anyway.

Just check in with yourself. Are you going because you like what it does for you? You may want to be the mom who goes to all of her kids' events or the coworker who supports her retiring colleagues even when it doesn't sound fun. And that's totally fine!

It's different from going to happy hour, staying in a job, staying in a relationship or going on a trip because you're worried about what everyone else will think.

Stop doing that.

Decide what you want. Believe it is all the reason you need. Make decisions from there.
