It’s Time to Jump In
Have you ever been at a pool and watched a little kid jump of the diving board for the first time? They've decided to do it, they feel brave and then when it's finally their turn they walk out to the edge of the board... and stop. You can practically see the thoughts running through their head...
It's too deep.
The side is SO far away.
It might hurt.
I've never done it before.
I'm scared.
But once they do it once they almost always get back in line to do it again. And again.
We don't outgrow this. The situation just changes. Maybe you want to ask for a raise, quit your job, change careers, leave a relationship, start a new venture but you're standing at the edge of it with all of these crazy, scary thoughts running through your head. And because this isn't the pool, there's no line behind you yelling at you to jump off or get down.
So you stand there. Letting those crazy, scary thoughts hold you back. Holding yourself back. Because you're focused on the wrong thing. You're only thinking about the initial jump, the part where you hit the water and everything is unknown.
What you should be asking yourself is how it feels to have already done it.
Picture the little kid again. Only this time once they've jumped in and made it to the side climbing out with the triumphant grin and pride radiating off of them.
That's what you should be focused on! Ask yourself what it feels like to be someone who has already done it. How does she act? Is she holding herself back? Start acting like her, think her thoughts, make her the voice in your head.
