Choosing a Word
Instead of setting resolutions for the new year, I like to choose a word. This word then acts as a filter for the goals and intentions I set throughout the year, both personally and professionally. This helps me not to get sidetracked by outside pressure and influence when I choose where to direct my energy and focus.
My word for 2022 is Ease.
I'm going to break down my process so you can follow it to choose a word and use it to direct your year.
Step 1 - Evaluation of 2021
How did you successfully use your word to guide your energy and focus?
Where could you have used your word more effectively?
My word for 2021 was Me!
With the exclamation point.
To be clear, this doesn't mean I ignored everyone around me and did exactly what I wanted all of the time, everyone else be damned. But I did use it to consistently ask myself two powerful, guiding questions.
What is the best thing I can do for Me! and the people I love?
If it was up to Me!, what would I do?
By asking myself these two questions centered around my 2021 word, I successfully used it to guide my energy and focus to:
Move back to the place that feels like my home
End personal and professional relationships I no longer wanted or needed and begin new ones
Stand my ground when I believe I'm doing what's best
Follow my interest in Human Design as I discovered it was the missing link for Me! and my clients and then fully embracing it as part of Me! and my business
Achieve one of my big goals as a coach
I could have used my word more effectively to trust myself and my intuition. There were times where I let doubt in Me! keep me from effectively using my word as a guide. I allowed my open Root Center to make me feel as though how I spent my time was out of my control instead of trusting I was using my time in the best way for me. There were also times where I let other people's opinions of Me! and what I should do override what I knew to be true about myself and what I needed.
Step 2 - Reflection on 2021
What are the themes of my Human Design chart?
What were the themes of my 2021 work?
As a Human Design coach, one of my favorite things to do is to dive into a new chart and see the recurring themes. As part of my reflection, I gave my own chart a fresh look. Two of my themes are the importance of waiting for things to happen instead of forcing it and trusting myself to know what's right.
As I got coached and did my own self-coaching throughout 2021, one thought kept popping up regardless of the situation. I believed something had to be hard work or it didn't count. As if blood, sweat and tears are what mattered, not the ultimate results I created.
When looking at the two together, I realized I wasn't trusting myself to know what I was good at and do it. I was telling myself if I could run a marathon without training for it, but climbing Mt. Everest could kill me, then climbing Everest was the only accomplishment that counted.
Step 3 - Selection of 2022 Word
How can I follow my Human Design Authority to choose a word?
I'm a Generator with an Emotional Authority so in order to choose my word for 2022 I've spent time in evaluation and reflection about the past year and waited for my intuition to give me a word.
When the word Ease came to me I sat with the emotional wave until I came to a clear yes or no. It was a definitive yes.
After evaluation and reflection on 2021, you can use your Authority to select your 2022 word.
If you have Splenic Authority, your intuition only speaks to you once. When a word comes to you, choose it.
If you have Sacral Authority go with your gut.
If you have an Emotional Authority like me, you should listen to your intuition and then allow the emotional ups and downs until you have a clear answer.
If you have an Ego Authority, you already know what your word is. Trust yourself.
If you have a Self-Projected Authority, you will have a vision of your word.
If you have a Mental Authority, you will decide on your word by talking to others about your evaluation and reflection.
Step 4 - Implementation of 2022 Word
Does this goal/intention/resolution/decision align with my word?
As I said earlier, I don't set resolutions. I decide on one or two year-long goals and then let myself be free to select other goals and intentions throughout the year filtered through my word.
This year my word is ease. In 2022 I'm going to ask myself:
What is the best thing I can do to create Ease for me and the people I love?
If I could do it with Ease, what would I do?
I'm still going to be my Generator, Virgo, defined Will Center self. In other words, I'm going to want to work my ass off. But I'm going to filter my priorities through the word of Ease. I'm not going to make things hard if they don't need to be.
Which means...
When I achieve a goal on the first try I'm going to celebrate the ease as well as the accomplishment.
I'm not going to discount the skills and talents that come easily to me.
When my intuition speaks clearly and definitively, I'm going to listen without letting societal pressure make it hard.
I'm going to let relationships of all kinds that feel easy be the ones to get most of my energy.
What word did you pick for 2022?
