You're So Good at It

My second husband and I worked together. That was fine until I became increasingly unhappy at our firm while he continued to think it was a good fit.

One of the things he used to say to me as I cried into my wine glass and complained about how I was miserable was, "But you're so good at your job." And I was. I'd even say I was excellent at my job. But that wasn't a good enough reason to stay.

Being good at something isn't a reason to keep doing it.

If you're excellent at your job but not happy there read that again. You can be good at something and also quit doing it. But we're not told that as we grow up. Society teaches us to find something we're good at and do it as a job. Forever.

That means that most of you picked a path when you were 18-22 and stayed on it. I know for me, there are a lot of decisions I made during that time in my life that I would definitely not make again now in my 40s. I'm guessing many of you feel the same. So why should your career be any different?

You can always make a new decision.

Human Design teaches us that there are three phases that we go through repeatedly throughout our lives - Disruption, The Void and Expansion.

The first is Disruption. It's exactly what it sounds like. It can be on a personal level like leaving a job, ending a relationship or an illness. But it can also be triggered by something outside you, for example a global pandemic.

Disruption could also be happening if you're itching for a change and not sure what to do about it. Maybe you're a senior leader at your company but you daydream about running a small nonprofit. Or perhaps you're a partner in your firm but your teenage dream of being a hairdresser keeps resurfacing. You might be googling "writer's retreat" when you find yourself unable to focus at work.

These are all signs that you're ready for the next chapter.

The next phase is the Void. When you're in the Void you feel lost and at loose ends. You're searching for direction and guidance but usually end up feeling confused and frustrated. This is normal and nothing has gone wrong.

But don't give in to the temptation to stick with what's comfortable.

Like a job where you excel even if it no longer fills your days with purpose like it once did. Just because you're good at it and maybe even loved it once, doesn't mean it's still right for you now. You feel lost for a reason. It's your soul telling you it's time for what's next.

It will be easy and tempting to convince yourself to stay. To doubt what your intuition is telling you. Or to listen to other people who tell you you're good at your job so you should keep doing it. Especially if what you're doing is what society traditionally values - a job with prestige and stability.

But this will just keep you in the Void and you'll stay lost and confused. That's how I ended up stressed, sick and stuck sobbing into my wine glass at night. For way longer than was necessary.

I don't want that for you.

Because what comes next is Expansion. This is when you become the next version of you. You start excelling at something new that lights you up and makes you excited to start the day.

I can help you get there. And navigate all of the road blocks, obstacles and life that happens along the way.
